Dutch authorities detained 34 people involved in drug cartel clashes near the German border

Dutch authorities arrested 34 people Wednesday at various locations across the country following a deadly shootout in a Dutch village, reportedly linked to a notorious drug lord, public broadcaster NOS reported.

The incident unfolded around 4:00 a.m. Tuesday when dozens of masked men, several armed with heavy firearms, disembarked from two vans in Overasselt, near the German border.

The group approached a farm belonging to a family allegedly involved in drug trafficking and opened fire on a car. The 51-year-old man inside the vehicle was killed, police told a press conference. The masked men also fired at two police officers, leaving one with life-threatening injuries.
